The Higher Certificate in Engineering in Civil Engineering provides students with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in civil engineering, construction, engineering mathematics, technical drawing, surveying and materials. The programme prepares students for entry-level opportunities in the construction and engineering industries while providing a foundation for further studies in Civil Engineering and related fields.
Graduates can contribute to construction projects, infrastructure development, site operations and technical support under appropriate professional supervision

The successful student would have obtained sufficient credit to further their studies at other institutions permitting them. Students can further their learning both horizontally, diagonally and vertically. Vertical articulation may be pursued at other public and private institutions, for example to the Diploma in Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering at Durban University of Technology or the Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Civil Engineering offered at TUT and similar diploma and degree qualifications offered at other universities. Horizontal articulation may be pursued at other public and private institutions, for example to the Higher Certificate in Digital Marketing or the Higher Certificate in Social Media and Communication or other Higher certificates offered at BCT, or the Higher Certificate in Construction Engineering or the Higher Certificate in Industrial Engineering or the Higher Certificate in Mechanical Engineering offered at TUT or the Higher Certificate in Construction and Engineering Drafting offered at IIE or the Higher Certificate in Information Technology offered at Durban University of Technology or other Higher Certificate qualifications in Management and related. Diagonal articulation may be pursued at other public and private institutions, for example to the Diploma in Information Technology or Diploma in Accounting offered at BCT or at DUT or MUT or Diploma qualifications in related fields or the Diploma: Construction Technology: Civil Engineering at Intec on the OQSF.

  • Civil Engineer – Pay Estimate: +/- R200,000 to R350,000 a year

The minimum entry requirement for this qualification is:

  • A National Senior Certificate with a Higher Certificate endorsement or higher and a minimum of 30% for English is required.
    or
  • A National Certificate (Vocational) – A minimum of 40% in English on either First Additional Language or Home Language level, and a minimum of 50% in four vocational subjects.
    or
  • A Senior Certificate with a pass in English.
    or
  • Mature Age Exemption: Candidates must have attempted Grade 12, on or above the age of 23 before or during the first year of registration with three years’ work experience and proven ability relating to the proposed programme as well as requisite communication skills.

All Examinations are set by Berea College of Technology, On successful completion of the programme, the student will receive a Berea College of Technology Higher Certificate in Engineering in Electrical Engineering.

Prescribed textbook lists will be provided by the academic department at your campus. Students will receive electronic versions of the study guides for this programme.
